Thoughts

Hi Pat, I was devastated last night to hear of the passing of our good friend John. We knew John to be a caring, thoughtful man with a wicked sense of humour. We scuba-dived with him, shopped in markets in Bali, took our kids to monkey forests, created excuses to avoid galleries, museums and local music and watched our kids entertained by London clowns and perform in Club Meds in the Bahamas and Bali. I still laugh when I think of the time he suckered me into being the street Santa Clause and standing there with a huge grin whilst Penny, Sam and Tom and my eldest two kids sat on my lap without knowing it was me. I also recall when you invited us to a barbeque at your house in Highgate. The Barbequing was left to John so - in honour of us from Australia he barbequed Kangaroo - which was awful. He was so proud of himself - I did not have the heart to tell him that Kangaroo in Australia is mainly sold as pet food. I recall so many different times spent with you and John and in all that time I never saw him behave in an unrespectable way to any person. We saw John as a wonderful and patient father - setting a terrific example for Penny, Sam and Tom. We saw him being a patient and loving husband to you and never heard an unkind word emit from him. We knew of some of his various business dealings over the years and saw that he had always behaved in a totally honourable manner in all those as well. He was a generous man and whilst we were not privy to all his charitable dealings I do know of help he quietly gave to others - in such a way that the recipient was not embarassed. We have known you and John for more than 40 years. Whilst we live on the other side of the world we have always considered you more than close friends. It will not be the same without John but I hope that we will still be your Australian family. Thank you so much for calling me last night, Pat. While the news was terribly sad I appreciate your letting us know. I will call you next week - unless you email me not to. Lots of love and please accept our condolences. Jim
